METHOD OF MEASURING OPTICAL FIBER AND DUMMY FIBER APPARATUS USED THEREFOR

PURPOSE:To enable the measurement of loss characteristic of an optical fiber in a long wavelength range, by connecting a dummy fiber apparatus having a band filter function of passing light only in the long wavelength range at one end of an optical fiber to be measured. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 21 of a dummy fiber apparatus 2 is connected to one end of an optical fiber 4 to be measured with a connector 3 while a detector 5 is connected to the other end thereof 4. The optical fiber 21 has a band filter function of passing light light only in a long wavelength range. In operation, a wide band of light from a light source LED1 is made incident into one end of the dummy fiber apparatus 2 to propagate through the dummy fiber 21 so that light having peak at the spectrum in a long wavelength range will be incident into the optical fiber 4. Then, the emitted light from the other end is introduced to the detector 5 to measure thereby enabling accurate measurement of the loss in the long wavelength range.
