PURPOSE:To obtain an electrochromic element accompanying color change by forming an electrochromic layer with tin nitride. CONSTITUTION:A transparent electrode base plate 3 for display is prepd. by forming film of tin oxide 2 on the surface of a glass plate 1 and patterning to an appropriate shape. A layer of tin nitride film 4 is formed on the transparent electrode base plate 3, and tin oxide film 6 is formed on another glass plate 5 which is patterned to an appropriate shape to form a counter transparent electrode base plate 3, 7. An epoxy seal part 8 is formed thereon. Both transparent base plates 3, 7 are adhered with the film surface facing each other, and the epoxy seal part 8 is cured, then, aq. KCl 9 is poured in an empty cell to obtain an electrochromic element 10.
