PURPOSE:To obtain a fluorine-contained polymer useful as an optical material, resist material, etc., in high yield, by polymerizing a specific fluorine-containing methacrylic ester by the use of a specific metallic alcoholate as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A fluorine-containing methacrylic ester (alpha-trifluoromethyl acryl ate such as especially methy-alpha-trifluoromethyl acrylate, etc.) shown by the formula II (RI is hydrocarbon alkyl, or fluorine alkyl) is polymerized by the use of a metallic alcoholate (preferably lithium-t-butoxide, potassium-t-butoxide, etc.) shown by the formula I (RII is hydrocarbon alkyl; M is alkali metal), to give a fluorine-contained polymer.
