PURPOSE:To vary a resolution for every character type without an increase in hardware and to fetch data by changing scanning resolutions in a printed character area and a hand-written character area and superscribing characters. CONSTITUTION:A control part 4.6 initializes a Y address counter 4.4 and an X address counter 4.2, causes the X address counter 4.2 to jog while the control part 4.6 is writing picture data on a scanning line to a picture buffer 4.1 from an input terminal 4.5, and completes the fetching of the data of one scanning line. By referring to a format flag memory 4.3 the superscription is executed to the picture data having been written at the top position by the basic scanning resolution in a printed character area, while in a hand-written character area the top position of the buffer 4.1 is delayed one by one whenever the data of the prescribed scanning line is written, and the basic scanning line is sampled for every two lines.
