The apparatus for separating potatoes and stones in potato harvesting works on the principle of dynamic dropping behaviour. The harvested mixture runs, on the rubber-finger band of known design, through one or more of the described activator stages, on which the mixture constituents are exposed in a controlled manner to specific dynamic influences. These increase the fractions of dropped stones selectively to 80 to 90%. In contrast to this, in conventional apparatuses without activators, at most 10% of the stones of the mixture material drop according to a mode which can be designated as spontaneous or static. So that as large a fraction as possible of the length of the rubber-finger band can be utilised as an activator stage, the mixture constituents are not deflected obliquely to the side from the band against the flow, as in conventional apparatuses, but in a space-saving way together with the flow by means of an appropriately arranged rotating brush roller. Potatoes resting on the rubber-finger tips are picked up by the rotating bristles to a greater extent than the stones which have dropped between the rubber fingers. Stones, thus accelerated away from the rubber-finger band, land in the vicinity of the end of the rubber-finger band, whereas the potatoes land at a greater distance from this. The two landing regions are delimited from one another by a separating edge.
