PURPOSE:To provide Clostridium sp.No.670 which is a bacillus separable from soil, belonging to Clostridium genus, preliferative with carbon dioxide and hydrogen to produce acetic acid, having acidic pH range for growth, and assimilating maltose. CONSTITUTION:The novel bacillus, Clostridium sp.No.670 (FERM-P 8047) is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacillus having a width of 0.6-1mum and a length of 5-9mum, proliferative with carbon dioxide and hydrogen to accumulate acetic acid in the medium, having a growth pH range of 4-7, assimilating saccharides including maltose, and producing acetic acid and butyric acid. It is necessary to prevent the intrusion of oxygen in the cultivation of the strain by substituting the atmosphere in the fermentation tank with an inert gas such as nitrogen. Since the microbial strain can be cultured by using carbon dioxide gas, sodium bicarbonate, etc. as the carbon source, it is advantageous for the production of acetic acid on industrial scale. |
