PURPOSE:To attain stable transfer by detecting the size of paper to be transferred, controlling the drive region of a thermal head in response to the detected size as disabled transfer. CONSTITUTION:Paper P being a transfer medium is pressed into contact onto a platen 12 by a resist roller 11 and carried by the rotation of the platen 12. When the tip of the paper P is detected by a tip detector 18, the platen 12 is reversed and the tip of the paper P is carried reversely up to the vicinity B of the thermal head contact point. Then the ink of a thermal transfer ribbon 14 is molten by the thermal head 13 to attain transfer. After the start of transfer, the paper P and the ribbon 14 are carried and when the rear end of the paper P is detected by a rear end detector 19, the paper is carried by a distance between the detector 19 and a thermal head contact point C and the data after that is controlled so as not to be transferred.
