PURPOSE:To dissolve the problems of defective welding resulting from faulty butted angles, by detecting the butted angle of blank materials by using the difference or ratio between cross-sectional areas of welding beads at the outer and inner surfaces as a parameter, when an electric welded pipe is manufactured. CONSTITUTION:Slit light 6a is irradiated upon the welded sections at the outer and inner surfaces of an electric welded pipe 2 before bead cutting operations are performed from a laser generator 9 and reflecting light 6c is made incident on an ITV camera 7, and then, optical cutting profile detecting signals are analyzed on a screen by means of an analyzing device 13. The device 13 calculates the cross-sectional areas of beads at the outer and inner surfaces 17 and 18 of the pipe 2 and detects the butted angle theta of a blank material 2 on the basis of the difference or ratio between the cross-sectional areas 17 and 18. The butted angle theta is controlled by a control device 14. Therefore, problems of defective welding resulting from faulty butted angles are eliminated.
