PURPOSE:To attain output from an original with left side filing and right side opening by reading data sequentially from the left side in the portrait output, applying parallel/serial conversion and sending the data from the least significant bit to a printer. CONSTITUTION:A printer 2 is provided additionally with a mode converting section 24. The mode converting section 24 applies mode switching between the landscape mode and the portrait mode. The section 24 controls the storage of a bit map memory 22, its transfer form and the output state of a converting section 23. When one page's content of, e.g., codes A, B, C... is sent from a central processing unit to a print control section 2 sequentially, the codes are stored in a storage section 25. A microprocessor 21 reads the codes in a storage section 25, retrieves a character pattern generating device 26 and stores a character pattern of the corresponding code to the bit map memory 22 based on the command of the mode converting section 24. When the converting section 23 outputs a picture element data, the output state is controlled by the mode converting section 24.
