In vitro micropropagation of plants, esp. woody plants such as Prunus and Malus, is carried out in a medium contg. an effective quantity of agar hydrolysate (I) in order to prevent vitrification (vitrescence or hyperhydria) of the plants. - (I) is prepd. by hydrolysing the agar in an acid (HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4, or an organic acid) at 20-200 deg.C for a period of 10 mins. to 7 days. Pref. this hydrolysis is effected at pH 3-4 and at 100-120 deg.C for 30-60 mins. At least 0.1 g/litre of (I) is used (calculated on initial wt. of unhydrolysed agar).
