PURPOSE:To simplify assembly of a plate-shaped light source by making either one plate of a discharge container the plate with a side wall provided with an exhaust tube while making the other plate have difference in level on its side end part and sealing both of them on the part having difference in level. CONSTITUTION:A plate-shaped light source to be used as the rear light source or the like of a transmission type lucid crystal display device or the like is formed by a method, in which mercury and rare gas are sealed in a discharge container 14, while one plate 24 is provided with plural electrodes arranged in a matrix shape and a fluorescent substance is applied to the other plate 23a. Thereby, the side of the plate 23a shall be the plate 23 with a side wall provided with an exhaust tube 22 while the other plate 24 shall have a difference in level blasted 1.0-6.0mm wide and 0.2-1.5mm deep. Then, the plate 23 with the side wall is fitted into the part having the difference in level for being sealed. Accordingly, glass frit is excluded from flowing out to a fluorescent screen as well to an electrode surface while removing discrepancy thus making assembly to be simple and sure.
