PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound of high purity useful as a germicide, antifungal, agent, etc. economically in high selectivity and yield, by reacting methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate with chlorine in a specific solvent at specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:Methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate as a starting material is dissolved in >=1pts. wt. based on 1 pts. wt. above-mentioned compound, halogenated hydrocarbon solvent and reacted an chlorinated with preferably 0.9-1.1mol, based on 1 mol starting material, chlorine at 60-140 deg.C to give the aimed compound of high purity. Chlorobenzene, trichlene, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,2,2- tetrachloroethane, o-dichlorobenzene, etc., are particularly preferable for use as the halogenated hydrocarbon solvent. USE:A raw material for polyester films of high performance having improved mechanical strength.
