PURPOSE:To remove impurities by a simple method by treating liquid or gaseous boron trichloride contg. impurities with an adsorbent. CONSTITUTION:Born trichloride to be purified, when it is in gaseous state, is passed through a packed bed of activated coal with a very small linear velocity so small as 0.01-1.0g/min.cm<2> to remove chlorides of Fe or Si, etc., as impurities by adsorption, and purified product is recovered in a dry ice trap. When the boron trichloride is in the liquid state, activated coal is dipped for ca.0.5-5hr in the liquid boron trichloride, then the boron trichloride is separated by batch distillation at 12-20 deg.C. Thus, boron trichloride of high purity is obtd. The activated coal to be used is optimally of 10-100Angstrom mean pore size.
