PURPOSE:To obtain a weld metal excellent in toughness and free from welding defects and to improve the detachability of slag and the visual shape of bead by specifying the components of a flux. CONSTITUTION:A flux for submerged arc welding, contains by weight percent, 35-54% CaF2, 10-25% Al2O3, 8-20% BaO, 5-20% SiO2, 0.5-5% MnO, 0.5-5% Na2O and/or K2O, and >=15% MgO. In this way, a weld metal of high toughness is obtained by enhancing the basicity and lowering the amount of O in the weld metal without causing the deterioration of the visual shape of bead, the inclusion of slag and the sticking of slag. etc.
