A device (11) for laterally supporting a motor vehicle on the carriageway (2) in the event of lateral skidding, by means of sliding shoes supported on the said carriageway (2) is constructed in such a way that the sliding shoe (12) is arranged centrally between the rear and/or front wheels (5) of the vehicle (1), that the sliding shoe (12) is provided with a running wheel (13) and can be supported by means of the latter on the carriageway (2), and that, furthermore, the sliding shoe (12) is held in a laterally swivellable fashion. In this way, secure support of a vehicle in the event of lateral skidding is automatically permitted. <IMAGE>
