Silicon prepared metallurgically in an arc furnace generally does not have a purity sufficient for the fabrication of solar cells. The silicon (9) is therefore purified in the molten state by injecting hydrogen. It is thereby possible in particular to reduce considerably the proportions of oxygen and carbon in the silicon. <IMAGE>
