PURPOSE:To prevent resonance of the reader itself by fitting a fixed scale to the reader itself via an elastic body so as to allow the elastic body to absorb vibration even when the fixed scale is vibrated. CONSTITUTION:An original 11 placed on an original platen glass 9 is fixed by an original retainer 12 and lighted by a fluorescent light 10. Then the optical path of the reflected light is changed by a reflection mirror 13 and the light is collected on a read element 15 via a condensor lens 14. The read element 15 is subject to electronically main scanning by a driver circuit 16 and the light is photoelectric-converted. On the other hand, the subscanning is executed by moving an optical system unit 19 along the scale 1 in the direction of arrow. The fixed scale might cause vibration in this case, but since the fixed scale 1 is fitted to the reader itself 23 by using the elastic body 22 made of a material such as rubber, the vibration is absorbed by the rubber 22 and is not exerted to the reader itself 23, which is not resonated.
