PURPOSE:To improve the document editing efficiency by using a dictionary memory for output of the type of the dictionary to which an access is possible with simple operation, therefore, enabling an operator to select and give easily an access to a desired dictionary. CONSTITUTION:A KANA (Japanese syllabary)/KANJI (Chinese character) conversion dictionary memory 16 contains plural types of dictionaries stored in a ROM. Then the contents of a desired dictionary are transferred when necessary out of a dictionary file 18 stored in an external memory. In other words, the 'readings' of the words to be converted into KANJI are supplied from an input device 10. Then the input character strings are supplied to a KANA/ KANJI conversion pat 14 via an input control part 12 with operation of a conversion key. Then the part 14 calculates the dictionary addresses corresponding to the 'readings' of the input character strings and issues the accesses to those addresses for extraction of candidate characters. In such a case, an operator can select easily a desired dictionary and feed an access to it by means of the memory 16. Thus, the document editing efficiency can be improved.
