NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is H, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, aryl, substituted aryl or aralkyl). EXAMPLE:1-Methyl-6-isopropylazulene-3-sulfonic acid sodium salt. USE:An antiulcer agent stable to light and heat and having excellent antiulcer activity and antipepsin activity. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by sulfonating the 6-substituted azulene derivative of formula II with e.g. concentrated sulfuric acid in acetic anhydride under cooling, and reacting the product with a solution of sodium hydroxide or sodium ethylate.
