PURPOSE:To increase the contact section between a head and a recording medium and to decrease the diameter of a cylinder to which the head is attached, by performing the signal processing for production of codes, correction of errors, etc. even in said contact section between the head and the recording medium. CONSTITUTION:In a recording mode the recording data is read out of a memory in a fixed cycle within a contact section between a rotary head and a recording medium. Then the recording data is written to the memory through a signal processing part in a section where no contact is obtained between the head and the recording medium and in the intervals of the reading process of the recording data. In a reproduction mode the reproduction data is written to the memory at a fixed cycle. Then the reproduction data is read out of the memory through the signal processing part in a section where the head has no contact with the recording medium and in the intervals of the writing process of the reproduction data. Then the signal processing timing is controlled according to the output signal of the counter.
