This identity card has a flat carrier which exhibits a contact area and to which an IC chip is attached, several layers predominantly consisting of a thermoplastic such as PVC of a layer structure being welded together under pressure and temperature and the carrier with the IC chip being inserted from a broad side of the layer structure into cut-outs in the layers, which cut-outs are aligned with one another. The disadvantage of the known methods of high expenditure of material and production technology is avoided by the fact that the carrier with the IC chip is positioned in the section in the top cover layer which is constructed to be smaller than the carrier and that during the subsequent welding under pressure and temperature the carrier is pressed, IC chip first, through the cut-out in the top cover layer into the layer structure and into a cut-out of the size of the carrier provided in an inlet layer and is embedded until the contacts at the surface of the carrier are flush with or slightly below the surface of the top cover layer.
