PURPOSE:To produce a polyester excellent in melt moldability and low in the content of polymer-insoluble fine particles derived from a catalyst, etc., by reacting a specified dicarboxylic acid (esterifiable derivative) with a glycol. CONSTITUTION:A dicarboxylic acid (esterifiable derivative) comprising 80mol% or above terephthalic acid and 60mmol% or below alkali metal sulfonate group- containing isophthalic acid is reacted with a glycol comprising 80mol% or above ethylene glycol in the presence of 5-50mmol%, based on the total acid component, glycol-soluble Mn and/or Mg compound (e.g., MgCl2). A P compound selected from among phosphorous and phosphoric acids (esters) is added to the reaction product, and the resulting mixture is polycondensed in the presence of at least one compound selected from among Ge compounds, Sb compounds and Ti compounds (e.g., GeO2) to obtain a polyester having a melt specific resistance at 290 deg.C<=10<1>OMEGAcm and an intrinsic viscosity >=0.35dl/g.
