NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [X is H, halogen or 1-4C alkyl; Y is alkylene; R<1> is mono- or dialkylamino, N-alkyl-N-alkoxyamino, (O-contain ing) saturated cyclic amino, or pyridyl; R<2> and R<3> are 1-4C alkyl]. EXAMPLE:2-( 5-Isopropyl-5-methyl-4-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl )benzoic acid 2- dimethylaminoethyl ester. USE:A selective herbicide. It exhibits excellent herbicidal effect against various weeds in plowed land, e.g. barnyard grass, smooth pigweed, etc. and in paddy field, e.g. false pimpernel, menochoria, etc. It has no phytotoxicity to crops, especially graminaceous crops such as wheat, corn, etc., and has high safety. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the compound of formula II with excess alcohol of formula III in a solvent or in the absence of solvent, in the presence of an alkali metal hydride, etc., in an inert gas atmosphere, preferably in N2 gas, etc., at 5-50 deg.C for 1-10hr. |
