PURPOSE:To subject lignin to solvolysis and to obtain a solution of wood having high concentration useful as various resin raw materials at normal pressure in a middle temperature range in a short time efficiently, by dissolving chemically modified wood in a polyhydric alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:For example, a substituent group is introduced into at least part of OH of cellulose, lignin, etc. by a means such as esterification, allylation, etc., to give a chemically modified wood (e.g., sawdust, wood fiber, wood chip, veneer waste, etc.), which is dissolved in a polyhydric alcohol (e.g., ethylene glycol, 1,4-butandiol, glycerin, etc.) in the presence of an acid such as HCl, H2SO4, AlCl3, etc. The dissolution is carried out by using usually 10-100pts.wt. wood based on 100pts.wt. polyhydric alcohol at normal pressure at about 80 deg.C. EFFECT:Chemically modified wood having low degree of substitution is easily solubilized.
