In the manufacture of bleached sulphate pulp a chemical cellulose pulp is delignified after cooking, prior to possible bleaching with an alkaline polysulphide solution. According to the invention the pulp, after cooking at a temperature of 100-160 degrees C, is treated with a solution containing 0.2-0.6 mole/l effective alkali, 0.5-5 per cent by weight of sulphur of the weight of the pulp in the form of polysulphide, that is to say Na2Sx, where x is 2 or higher, and in the presence of a polysulphide stabilizer.
