Method of authenticating documents and particularly identity documents manufactured from solid media. It consists essentially in depositing, within the thickness of the medium or on its surface, if it is invisible to the naked eye, a particular watermark which can be associated without any possible error with a sending organisation and/or with one or more holders. The characteristics of the watermark relate to its shape which may vary infinitely and/or to its arrangement and its orientation with respect to the document. A detector operating by scanning, for example, makes it possible to identify the watermark and to characterise it via an assembly of numerical authentication values for the document and/or for its holder.
