PURPOSE:To decrease the reduction of a read time by providing a scanning range setting means corresponding to a range required for reading and applying subscanning according to the setting means so as to omit the scanning of the part not required for reading. CONSTITUTION:A read mark 2 representing the original read range and a scanning mark 3 setting the relative scanning range of a CCD5 to an original 1 in the subscanning direction are provided in parallel in the subscanning direction on a sheet 4 provided in parallel with the original 1 on the face of the original 1. The CCD5 has an original read head 5a reading the original 1, a read mark read head 5b reading the mark 2 and a scanning mark read head 5c reading the scanning mark 3. A read mark detection part 10 outputs a read mark detection signal 19 and a scanning mark detection part 11 outputs a scanning mark detection signal 20. A device control part 12 controls a motor direction signal 25, a motor drive signal 24 and a picture signal control signal 21 while supervising detection signals 19, 20, omits scanning between points A and B and between points E and F so as to reduce the scanning time of the prescribed original.
