PURPOSE:To obtain an average value of many measured values in a short time by coinciding the tip of a vertically movable conical point pin of a differential transformer with the tip of a conical point pin of a position adjustment device and measuring the thickness of paper by horizontally moving the differential transformer and the position adjustment device in a body and keeping the tips of the both pins in contact with the upper and lower surfaces of the inspected paper. CONSTITUTION:A differential transformer 1 capable to measure a very small displacement incorporates a core 2 which is vertically movable and formed to have a downward conical point pin 2a at its lower end. A tip 2b of the core 2 has a radius of curvature r of approx. 0.05-0.1mm. Meantime, a position adjustment device 3 is installed at the lower opposite side of an inspected material 6 being equipped with an upward conical point pin 4 at its upper end. A tip 4a of the pin 4 has a radius of curvature (r). By aligning the both conical point pins 2a, 4 with the both axes centers on a straight line in opposite direction and attaching the differential transformer 1 and the position adjustment device 3 to a frame 5 in a body and fixing the inspected material 6 to the outer frame 5 by a clamp 8 after inserting the inspected material 6 to a clearance between the conical point pins 2a, 4, then a generated electromotive voltage variation is taken out as an electric signal by shifting the differential transformer and others horizontally. The measured value of the paper thickness is calculated statistically from the output electric signal.
