The invention relates to a barrier structure which consists of a foundation body, laid on the bottom of the stretch of water and extending over the entire width of the stretch of water, and at least one closure body which is designed as a trap and is pivotably connected to the foundation body by a horizontal spindle running in its longitudinal direction, at least one chamber being provided at or in the closure body. When the closure body is resting on the foundation body, air can be directed into the chamber while displacing ballast water. A lifting force can be imparted to the closure body by the air in order to pivot the closure body into its raised blocking position and to hold it in this position. In the raised position, water can be directed into the chamber in order to reduce the lifting force and to swing back the closure body into its lowered position. In order to avoid damage to the structure during the lowering, control means are provided by which the lowering of the closure body can be controlled in such a way that the speed with which the closure body strikes the foundation body drops towards zero. Furthermore, the closure body is releasably connected to the foundation body, as a result of which efficient and reliable assembly, repair and maintenance is made possible.
