PURPOSE:To manufacture continuously medium-carbon ferromanganese with high productivity at a low cost by charging manganese ore having a specified water content into an electric furnace in which the surface interval between electrodes is specified times the diameter of the electrodes and by regulating the basicity of slag produced to a specified value. CONSTITUTION:The surface interval between electrodes in an electric furnace is made >=1.8 times the diameter of the electrodes, and the water content of manganese ore to be charged is restricted to <=1%. When the manganese ore is charged into the electric furnace, the bridging of starting materials in the furnace is prevented and the starting materials drop smoothly by the dead load. The basicity of slag produced is regulated to 1.05-1.2 so that a desiliconization reaction is allowed to proceed effectively. Thus, medium-carbon ferromanganese is manufactured continuously and smoothly.
