PURPOSE:To obtain an optical character reader superior in economization by driving plural CCD sensors so that outputs of individual CCD sensors are continuous with respect to time and digitizing outputs from CCD sensors with an A/D converter. CONSTITUTION:The fall of a transfer gate clock phiTB corresponds to the time which is time tDLY earlier than the end of an output OSA. When the time tDLY elapses after the fall of the transfer gate clock phiTB, an output OSB is transferred form a CCD 8 synchronously with a shift clock omitted in the figure. This output OSB is outputted for a period corresponding to the length of the CCD sensor 8 (for example, 2,048 clocks) similarly to the output OSA. A signal MPX is changed from '0' to '1' simultaneously with the end of the output OSA. As the result, outputs OSA and OSB are amplified and are coupled into a signal OS continuously with respect to time, and this signal OS is given to an A/D converter 12. This signal OS is subjected to A/D conversion by the A/D converter 12, and the output after A/D conversion is given to a character recognizing part 17, and characters are recognized there.
