PURPOSE:To cut off an optical fiber precisely by one press of a cutting knife by moving the cutting knife in the vertical direction to the pressing direction of the cutting knife every press of the cutting knife to the optical fiber bare wire so that the sharpest position of the cutting knife is pressed against the bare wire to form an initial flaw. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber bare wire F is fitted to a holding part 2 and the leading end part of the wire F is held between both chuck chips 20, 22. An adjusting screw 33 of a cutting means 4 is pressed in the direction of the wire F and the cutting knife 34 is pressed against the side of the wire F held by the holding part 2. When the cutting knife 34 is abutted upon the wire F, a compression spring 30 is contracted to absorb the pressing force, so that the pressing force of the cutting knife 43 against the wire F is almost fixed and the prescribed initial flaw can be formed on the wire F. Then, the working shaft 13 of a tensile means 3 is depressed to apply the tension to the wire F having the initial flaw and to cut off the wire F from the position of the initial flaw.
