PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound selectively, in high yield, under mild condition, by irradiating a cycloalkane-1, 3-diene compound with light in the presence of a specific thiourea compound together with O2 and a sensitizer. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III can be produced by (1) dissolving the cycloalkane-1, 3-diene compound of formula I (n is 1 or 2) in a solvent such as acetone cooled to 0 deg.C, (2) adding a sensitizer such as Rose Bengal Blue, methylene blue, etc. and a thiourea compound of formula II (R and R' are H, 1-6C alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, or phenyl substituted with 1-3C alkyl; excluding the case that both R and R' are H) excluding thiourea, e.g. N-methylthiourea, (3) introducing O2 gas into the reaction mixture for 5min, and (4) irradiating the mixture with light radiated from a 450W high-pressure mercury lamp, etc., through a pyrex filter under the supply of O2 gas at room temperature or thereabout for 0.5-24hr. USE:Used as a synthetic raw material for 2-cyclopentenon-4-ol, a prostaglandin derivative, etc.
