A process is described for removing undesired gaseous components from hot flue gases which are produced in the combustion of carbon-containing fuels. The flue gas, for cooling and preliminary purification, is passed over regenerators or other heat exchangers and then freed from SO2. In order also to remove NOx in a simple manner and to apply this process in already existing flue gas desulphurisation plants, it is proposed to cool the hot flue gas in the regenerators or heat exchangers in heat exchange with atmospheric air to temperatures between 0 DEG C and 60 DEG C. At this temperature, the flue gas, to remove SO2, is treated with a scrubbing agent composed of up to more than half of tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether and, to remove NOx, the flue gas is likewise treated with a scrubbing agent of this type.
