PURPOSE:To obtain a sintered material consisting of firmly bonded ceramic and metallic layers by press-molding a powdery Cr-Fe mixture and a powdery Fe-base material in two layers, sintering the molded body, and carrying out oxidation treatment. CONSTITUTION:A powdery Cr-Fe mixture and a powdery Fe-base material such as iron powder, cast iron powder or stainless steel powder are successively filled into a metallic mold and press-molded. This two-layered molded body is sintered by heating in vacuum. The sintered body is heated under a prescribed partial pressure of oxygen to oxidize the Cr element without oxidizing the Fe element. By this oxidation the layer contg. the Cr powder is converted into a chromium oxide ceramic layer. The surface of the ceramic layer of the two- layered sintered material is used as a sliding surface.
