PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polyester capable of forming optically anisotropic molten phase, and melt-moldable easily, by copolymerizing a dihydroxydiphenyl ether derivative, an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid derivative and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid derivative. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyester capable of forming optically anisotropic molten phase at <=400 deg.C is constituted from the recurring units composed of (A) 5-40(mol)% unit of formula I, (B) 5-40% unit of formula II and (C) 20-90% unit of formula III (Ar is 1,4-phenylene or 2,6-naphthalene), wherein the amount of the unit I is equal to that of the unit II, and at least a part of the hydrogen atoms bonded to the aromatic rings of the units I-III may be substituted with 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, halogen or phenyl.
