PURPOSE:To facilitate partial revision of information even for an additional write type optical disc by poviding a means checking the state of a recording area and discriminating whether read/write is applied to the recording area or read/write is applied to its alternate recording area. CONSTITUTION:An alternate recording area detection number counter (n) is initiated to (o) at reproduction of information. The state of a recording area being an object in a recording medium 1 is checked by using a recording state check means 5. When the state of the recording area is in the recording state, the information is read by using an information reproducing means 3. When the (n) reaches N, an error processing is executed. When the state of the recording area is in-recording state, an error processing is executed. When the state of the recording area is in erasure state, an alternate recording area to the recording area undergoing a check is obtained by using an alternate recording area detecting means 6. After the (n) is incremented by 1, the similar procedure is repeated to the obtained alternate recording area.
