An energy converter having a magnetic-core intermediate store, characterised in that the magnetic-core intermediate store has allocated to it two external, parallel-connected magnetic circuits, which are of different dimensions, the first magnetic circuit, which is designated as a pulse-magnetising circuit, having a higher magnetic reluctance than the second, which is designated the operating circuit, the winding of the pulse-magnetising circuit having lower inductances and shorter time constants than the operating circuit, and in that the currents which are used for the purpose of changing the induction from positive to negative and vice versa in the pulse-magnetising circuit have (for the purpose of flux passing through the magnetic-core intermediate store in the opposite direction) a duration which is far less than the time which the operating circuit requires to complete the [lacuna] by the commutation of the flux direction in the magnetic core and to convert a part of the energy, which is buffer-stored in the magnetic-core store, into electrical or mechanical work. <IMAGE>
