PURPOSE:To execute the halftone image processing only in an arbitrary area and to obtain efficiently a high quality reproduced image by sorting out image information into a line image area and a halftone image area and providing an area sorting means for producing a halftone image area control data. CONSTITUTION:Image information from an original reader 2 is sequentially transferred to an image processing circuit 43, and an image area separation processing part 43a sorts out said information to be in the halftone image area or not. If the halftone processing is necessary, a CPU32 transmits a data selecting signal to an image information selection processing part 43c to select the input halftone image data. If the halftone processing is unnecessary, a binary image data selection command is transmitted to the selecting processing part 43c from the CPU to select the inputted binary image data, whereby binary image data and halftone image data are encoded by an encoding processing part 43d and stored on an image file 4. Then the control data on the halftone image area sorted out by the image area separation processing part 43a is produced, and stored in an external memory 35 or a RAM34. Then it is registered on the image file 4 and the control is terminated.
