PURPOSE:To reduce the number of erroneous copying caused by the color mode setting defect by providing a color discriminating means which discriminates the color state of an original and selects the reproduction color of a picture image forming means and setting automatically the color mode of a printer corresponding to the picture image of the original. CONSTITUTION:With the aid of a command for instructing prescan start, an incident light chrominance component from an optical scan part 1 is color-splitted by a GBR filter, converted into an electrical signal and outputted to the color discriminating means 4. A table memory 3 is referred to discriminate sequentially inputted chrominance components, and the reproduction color used for development is stored in the memory. After the termination of the prescan, a stored reproduction chrominance component (a) is transmitted to a developing means 5 and a latent image forming means 6a, and the color mode for copying toner is automatically set. Then with the aid of an image forming command, the optical scan part 1 exposes the original, and a picture image signal (b) which is subjected to the color split and converted into an electrical signal is transmitted to the latent image forming means 6a, thereby forming a latent image on a photosensitive material 6b. This image is made visible by the reproduction color in the color mode automatically set by the developing means 5, and sequentially copied on a recording paper.
