Apparatus for winding strip material helically upon a beam comprises a traverse mechanism along a beam which is hollow and perforated and has conical sections extending between end flangers and the beam barrel. The traverse mechanism comprises a pivotallysupported guide having an insulative plastic portion which slides upon the wound strip, and a metallic portion which engages the conical beam section. These complete an electrical circuit and effect traverse reversal.
