PURPOSE:To produce an ornament having lustrous and mat parts is sharp contrast by coating the surface of a substrate having specular and rough parts with ceramics by plasma chemical vapor deposition. CONSTITUTION:A substrate 1 for the ornament such as cuff buttons is made of a sintered hard WC-Ni-Cr alloy, and the surface is mirror-polished. The region of the polished surface corresponding to a pattern 2 is roughened by chemical etching, and the ceramic coating layer 3 of SiC or TiN is formed by the plasma chemical vapor deposition. A high-grade cuff button having a mat silver-gray pattern against a lustrous pitch-black background in sharp contrast is obtd.
