PURPOSE:To improve initial property of running-in and resistance to wear, by a method wherein a groove-like hardened part is formed in the central part in the direction of thickness of an end surface brought into slide contact with the side housing of a side seal by melt contraction. CONSTITUTION:Only a central part in the direction of thickness is molten and hardened by the use of a beam heat source, such as electronic beam, laser beam, without melting both ends in a longitudinal direction of a side seal slide surface. A molten chilled part is dented to form a grooved part, and the width of the groove is about 1/5-4/5 the thickness of the side seal. This improves both initial property of running-in and long-term resistance to wear, and enables gas sealing ability to be provided in an excellent manner for a long time commencing with the primary stage of the used.
