In a rolling mill in which at least one of the work rolls has a smaller diameter than a roll of a conventional 4-high mill, the work roll is backed by a pair of intermediate rolls, which are in turn supported by a number of separate backing rolls, each divided axially, each portion being in contact with at least one intermediate roll. First bearing case contg. a bearing is provided at each end of the small work roll and a second bearing case contg. bearings is provided at the ends of the intermediate rolls so that these rolls are supported on the bearing cases. Independent roll bending forces can be applied to the work roll e.g. via hydraulic cylinders and the intermediate roll bearing cases.
