The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 4-hydroxy-3-(5-methyl-3-isoxazolocarbamyl)-2-methyl-2H-1,2-benzothiazi ne 1,1-dioxide of the formula <IMAGE> which is characterised in that the anion of 4-hydroxy-3-(5-methyl-3-isoxazolocarbamyl)-2H-1,2-benzothiazine 1,1-dioxide is formed by treating the conjugated acid with a deprotonating agent and the product is subsequently reacted with a methylating agent in a polar solvent.
