The novel derivatives of 1-phenylimidazole-5-carboxylic acids which are substituted in the phenyl ring are described by the formula (I) <IMAGE> where the symbols have the following meaning: R<1> and R<2> independently of one another represent (C1-C4)alkyl; R<3> represents (C1-C4)alkyl, (C1-C4)alkoxy or halogen, where, if n > 1, the substituents can also differ from each other; n is 0, 1, 2 or 3; and X represents a cyano, ester, thiolate, amido, thioester, amidoxime, alkoxymethyl, hydroxymethyl, aldehyde, keto, oxime, acetal, ketal, thioacetal or thioketal group, or a heterocyclic substituent (for example tetrazolyl). The novel compounds have a plant-growth-regulating action. In a process for the preparation of these compounds, the starting compound is the free carboxylic acid (X = -COOH), its amide (X = -CONH2), its lower alkyl esters (X = -CO-O-(C1-C4)alkyl) or activated derivatives such as acid halides, and these are then derivatised. The compounds also include the salts and quaternisation products of the basic imidazole ring. |
