PURPOSE:Allyloxymethylbenzene, as a starting material, is subjected to the oxo reaction to enable simple and high-yield production of the titled substance which is used as a perfumery compound having aldehydic and citrus-like green smell and good smell persistency. CONSTITUTION:Allyloxymethylbenzene of formula I is allowed to react with carbon monoxide and hydrogen, preferably at a partial pressure ratio of 0.5-2.0 (carbon monoxide/hydrogen), at 0-170 deg.C, preferably 80-130 deg.C and 20-250 atmospheric pressure in the presence of ligands which can form a complex with a compound of an element in the group VIII of the elementary periodic table to give the objective compound of formula II (formyl groups bonds to the 1, 2 and 3-positions). The compound of an element in the group VIII of the periodic table is preferably RhH(CO)(PR<1>R<2>R<3>)3(R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are alkyls) and the ligand which can form a complex therewith is preferably a tertiary phosphine.
