PURPOSE:To prevent that a necessary part is not outputted at the time of retriev al by cutting a read picture of the scope which does not exceed the dimensions of a display memory having a retrieving device, and registering the fed picture. CONSTITUTION:When a seal slip is set to a reading part 12 and the prescribed control is executed, read picture data (i) are stored at a picture memory 13 and further, displayed at a CRT14. An operator, while the operater is watching a display picture, shifts the cursor of a display screen, surrounds with a frame and pushes a registering indication button 165. Then, a feeding limit control part 34 counts a feeding width A, reads the smallest dimensions M from a memory part 33 and compares at a comparing part 34a. As the result, in case of A<=M, the feeding processing is executed. It is reported that at the time of A>M, a reporting signal (b) is sent to a main control part 11a, a signal (c) is come out from the main control part 11a and the width of the feeding pattern is too large. Then, the operator executes the cutting control in which the designated area is made narrower so that A<=M can be obtained. The cut data (i) are compressed 18 and registered at a registering file 3.
