The invention relates to a hold-up device for billet shears with crank or eccentric drive, by means of which the bar sections (26) are firmly clamped against the top shearing blade (22) during the cutting. The aim of the invention is to reduce the cost in terms of material and production and improve the functional reliability. The object of the invention is to design the drive of the hold-up device in such a way that only a relatively short amount of clamping travel of the clamping wedge (16) is required and at the same time the clamping wedge (16) is held in its position without great retaining force - if possible in a self-locking manner - during the cutting. According to the invention this is achieved in that the blade slide (3) is supported on a piston/cylinder unit (6) arranged under the same and is in operative connection with the drive only during a certain phase of the crank rotation, and a hold-up slide (15) is mounted in a recess of the blade slide (3) in such a way as to be displaceable in the vertical direction. The hold-up slide (15) can in turn be locked relative to the blade slide (3) during the cutting by a clamping wedge (16) displaceable in the horizontal direction (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
