PURPOSE:To apply substantial light to the other part of an original as well even if the original is thin and to detect exactly the original with linearly polarized light by forming a metallic layer as a surface to cover the original. CONSTITUTION:An original cover 13 is disposed on the rear side of an original tray 12 which supports the original O of an original detector. The rear of the original O is covered by the metallic layer 13' on the inside surface of the cover 13. An optical system 25 which scans the original O is disposed in accordance with the tray 12 and the light from a lamp 26 of the optical system 25 is polarized by a polarizing plate 28 to linearly polarized light which is then irradiated to the tray 12. The reflected light from the original O of the tray 12 and the metallic layer 13' of the cover 13 is detected by an optical sensor 30 via a polarizing plate 30. The output from the sensor 30 is processed by a binary coding circuit 32, an AND gate 33 and an encoder 34, etc. The substantial light is applied to the other part of the original O by the metallic layer 13' covering the original O even if the original is thin. The original O is thus exactly detected by the linearly polarized light.
